Maryland Nonprofits Remembers Representative Elijah E. Cummings

It is with heavy hearts that we observe the passing of Representative Elijah E. Cummings, who served Maryland, the City of Baltimore, and our nation with integrity and had a passion for justice that inspired us all. Congressman Cummings championed the causes of the people of Baltimore and our region and brought his powerful insights gained from a life of public service into our nation’s capital to create equitable and just public policy. His selfless service to his country touched so many areas important to community wellbeing, including health care reform, the health of the Chesapeake Bay, public transit, and voting rights.

Congressman Cummings was also a great champion of nonprofit organizations. He spearheaded the Elijah Cummings Youth Program in Israel, an organization that engages Baltimore youth in leadership development, sends fellows to Israel, and nurtures close relationships with Baltimore’s Jewish community. Rep. Cummings served on the boards of the Baltimore City Historical Society, National Aquarium, Baltimore Zoo, and Boy Scouts of America, and was honored with countless awards, including the Urban Visionary Award from the Center for Urban Families.

All of us in the Maryland Nonprofits community extend our heartfelt condolences to Representative Cummings’ wife, family, and countless friends.

His legacy will be long-lived.
