From Vacant Spaces to Vibrant Communities: How Intersection of Change Gets It Done

November 6, 2026

Thirty years ago, a vacant intersection in Baltimore became the starting point for something much bigger.

In a neighborhood that had experienced years of disinvestment and neglect, the founders of Intersection of Change saw an opportunity to create something different.

Rather than waiting for change to happen, they began building it alongside their community.

What started as an effort to transform neglected spaces has grown into a community-centered organization addressing critical needs through housing, the arts, and access to fresh food.

Over the years, Intersection of Change has helped turn dilapidated buildings into recovery housing and spaces for artistic expression. Blank walls have become colorful community murals, bringing inspiration and creativity to neighborhood streets.

Vacant lots have been transformed into a 1.5-acre urban farm, providing fresh produce to residents who face barriers to accessing grocery stores.

Each of these transformations represents more than a physical improvement.

They reflect a commitment to ensuring that residents have access to the resources, opportunities, and community spaces they deserve.

Today, Intersection of Change continues that mission through programs designed to meet the needs of the people who call the neighborhood home.

Its recovery housing program provides support for women who have nowhere else to turn, creating opportunities for stability and a path forward.

Its arts programming offers classes for children and adults who might otherwise be unable to afford access to creative education.

And its urban farm helps address food access challenges by growing fresh produce within the community.

Together, these programs demonstrate how community revitalization can address multiple needs while building on the strengths of local residents.

What makes Intersection of Change’s approach especially meaningful is its commitment to community leadership.

Rather than imposing an outside vision for neighborhood improvement, the organization has focused on helping residents shape their own future.

Its work is grounded in the belief that communities have the knowledge, resilience, and determination to create meaningful change when given the resources and opportunities to do so.

Three decades later, the results can be seen in the spaces transformed, the programs established, and the opportunities created for Baltimore residents.

That’s how Intersection of Change gets it done.

By transforming neglected spaces into places of healing, creativity, and connection, Intersection of Change is demonstrating the power of community-driven solutions.

Its story is a reminder that lasting change doesn’t always begin with a large institution or outside investment. Sometimes, it begins when neighbors come together and decide to build something better.
