On January 28, 2022, the Maryland Nonprofits Board of Directors elected officers for the 2022 calendar year. Several officers were re-elected: Chair Kimberly Corbin of the Greater Washington Urban League, Vice Chair Violet Apple of Girls Scouts of Central Maryland, and Secretary Carl DeLorenzo of Howard County Government. Cheryl Thomas, CPA was elected Treasurer.
“As the Chair of the Board for Maryland Nonprofits, I am ecstatic to welcome and serve among our 2022 officers,” said Chair Kimberly Corbin.
“Nonprofits are the most resilient, heart-filled, kind, compassionate, and effective organizations I have ever had the privilege of serving. Our board is providing a phenomenal level of leadership as we work together to address the many strains of the COVID-19 pandemic on nonprofits and the communities we serve” said Maryland Nonprofits President & CEO Heather Iliff.
Chair Kimberly Corbin brings extensive experience in the nonprofit and business sectors. Among her many achievements, Board Chair Corbin served as Director of Corporate and Financial Operations for emPower Educational Services and Lead Consultant for Compass. She worked extensively with the Montgomery County Food Security Collaborative to end hunger in Montgomery County. She also served for 9 years as Vice President of GE Commercial Finance. Her work is applied with an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Bachelors in Business Administration and Management from Florida A&M University.
A strong advocate for children, Vice Chair Violet M. Apple has been dedicated to the empowerment and development of girls for over 25 years. Since 2014, Vice Chair Apple has been leading Girl Scouts of Central Maryland as CEO. Her past service to the Girl Scouts is a foundational component of her life’s work. Vice Chair Apple embraces the philosophy that it is important that we become the makers of history by preparing today our young girls for a brighter tomorrow.
Secretary Carl DeLorenzo is Director of Policy & Programs for the County Executive at Howard County Government. Secretary DeLorenzo is an operational expert with experience in nonprofit, business, and legal practices. He served as Chief Operating Officer of Sage Policy Group, a firm specializing in fiscal and legislative analysis, public policy evaluation, expert witness reports, and economic feasibility assessments. Secretary DeLorenzo served as Adjunct Professor of Health Policy Program Implementation & Cost-Benefit Analysis at the University of Maryland. He also served as Budget Analyst at the Maryland Department of Budget and Management.
Treasurer Cheryl M. Thomas, CPA is Interim Executive Director of the Delta Research and Educational Foundation (DREF) and President & CEO of Thomas & Associates Consulting LLC, a financial management and consulting firm. She has worked extensively with non-profit organizations in the DC-MD-VA metropolitan area since 2006. Her firm’s portfolio spans from accounting for business transactions to working with management to develop financial strategies to solve complex operational challenges. Ms. Thomas began her career at a Big Eight public accounting firm and spent more than 20 years with the largest secondary mortgage investor, Fannie Mae.
Dirk Butler, Natasha Cavanaugh, and Erica Joseph were elected to serve as at-Large members of the Executive Committee.
Chair Corbin has appointed the following Maryland Nonprofits Board of Directors committee chairs for 2022:
- Governance: Erica Joseph, Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore
- Justice, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Natasha Cavenaugh
- Development: Rebecca Teaff, Redstart Creative
- Advocacy: Dana Vickers Shelley, ACLU of Maryland
- Strategic Planning: Dirk Butler, The Center for Policing Equity
